Yellow Dal

Yellow Dal

Time: Several hours on stove or in rice cooker. Faster with pressure cooker.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of yellow dal
  • 1 large tomato or 2 small tomatoes, chopped
  • fresh cilantro
  • 1 small green chili
  • 1 teaspoon of salt, add more if necessary
  • 1/8 teaspoon of turmeric
  • 2 teaspoon of cumin seeds
  • 4 or 5 curry patta
  • 1 teaspoon garlic

Instructions:

  • Soak the dal overnight
  • Rinse the dal
  • Put in pot with twice the amount of water and simmer, stirring periodically
  • Continue adding small amounts of water until the dal is dissolved
  • If possible, let it cool and then blend it to make it creamier
  • Add chopped tomato, cilantro, chillies and salt
  • Next, to make the tarka, fry the cumin, garlic and curry patta. Once garlic starts to change color, add the oil, garlic, cumin and carry patta to the dal
  • Can adjust water and salt quantity if needed
