Bolognese Sauce

Bolognese Sauce

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb of minced meat (we use beef)
  • 1 small onion (can also use 2 table spoons of pre-fried onions, ground up in food processor)
  • 1 6 oz can of tomato paste
  • 4-5 cloves of garlic (1 clove of garlic is roughly 1 to 1.5 teaspoons of bottled minced garlic)
  • 2 medium sized tomatoes
  • 1 beef soup cube
  • 1/2 teaspoon of oregano
  • 1/2 tablespoon of Italian seasoning
  • 2 tablespoons of butter (if desired)
  • 1 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2-1 cup of red wine (if desired)
  • 1 teaspoon of honey

Instructions:

  1. Finely chop the onions, garlic, and tomatoes.
  2. Dissolve the beef soup cube in 1 cup of boiling water.
  3. In a different pot, cook the onions and garlic in oil over medium heat.
  4. Add the salt.
  5. Once the onions are transparent, add the meat and the tomato paste, constantly stirring so it browns evenly. Adding the tomato paste at this step makes it easier to stir and brown evenly so the ground meat is fine.
  6. Once the meat changes color, add the chopped tomatoes and the soup broth.
  7. Add the oregano, italian seasoning, butter, honey, and wine.
  8. Let the sauce simmer until you can see the oil separate on the surface (roughly 30-40 minutes).

Serve with pasta. Also good in quesadillas or toastie sandwiches with cheese.
